Fastest vs cheapest truck route in Europe

A car GPS answers “how do I get there fastest?” A dispatcher quoting a 40 t truck has a different question: what does this lane actually cost — tolls, vignettes, fuel, and time — on the path the vehicle is allowed to drive. Across 49 countries those two answers often diverge. Motorways cut hours and raise road charges. A cheaper corridor can add driving time and diesel. You cannot see that trade-off on a passenger-car map.

What “fastest” and “cheapest” mean for a truck

Fast (fastest) is the time-first HGV route: motorways and highways where the vehicle can use them. Use it for live animals, just-in-time slots, and any load where a missed window costs more than extra tolls.

Economical (cheapest) is the money-first HGV route. It still respects truck restrictions, but it prefers a path with lower tolls and vignettes even when the kilometres or hours go up. Use it when the customer will not pay for speed and you need the number that protects margin.

Neither mode is “the right route” in the abstract. The right route is the one whose time and road cost match the contract in front of you. Compare both routes on one screen

If you only ever run Fast, you never see what you paid for speed. If you only ever run Economical, you never see how many hours you bought back. Both runs the two calculations together and puts them on the same result:

What the comparison includes

A useful HGV comparison is not “km and hours”. RouteCalc returns the cost stack you quote against:

Set truck type and EURO class before you calculate. Two trucks on the same corridor can produce different tolls. That is why a car-style fastest route is the wrong input for a freight rate — the same issue as stacking national toll tables by hand.

How to run the comparison

1. Open Route Optimization. Enter origin, destination, and any via-stops (postal code + country, or GPS).
2. Set truck type and EURO class to match the vehicle you will send.
3. Choose Both (or Fast / Economical if you already know the constraint).
4. Read the two totals: time on Fast, road money on Economical. Check the per-country toll split so a cheap corridor is not hiding a surprise in one state.
5. Keep the option that matches the booking. After signup, send that route to the driver on WhatsApp.

When to pick Fast, Economical, or Both

Both first on a new lane or a tender. You learn the price of speed once, then you can quote Fast with a surcharge or Economical as the base rate.

Fast when the slot is fixed, the cargo is time-critical, or the customer already pays for express.

Economical when the rate is tight, the truck can take extra hours, or — on domestic Romanian work after TollRo — motorway kilometres are no longer “free” on the quote.
